Leica Adds T-Strap Lug Kit Accessory

One of the things we bemoaned in our recent Hands-on Review of the Leica T (Type 701), as others have as well - was the fact that the Leica Carrying Strap was your only option with the T. You were severely limited to a choice of essentially ONE strap, albeit in four color options - and at a cost of $79 USD. It would appear that Leica has listened - and now carries the Leica T-Strap Lug Kit for $48 USD! It's made by Match Technical, maker of fine soft releases and Thumbs-up (which we reviewed). An expensive accessory just to use a third-party strap... But it's better than nothing!

Available at Leica Store San Francisco and Miami.

Leica - Lifestyle Brand and Fashionista?

$
0
0

As the fall fashion season ramps up, for the third time now - Leica was referenced by an online fashion magazine and a fourth time, mentioned in the context of fashion. Photographers are shooting footwear with thelr Leicas via BallerStatus, a San Francisco satellite of Racked reports on the new Leica Store San Francisco, Harper's BAZAAR talks about Lenny Kravitz and his Monochrom and now - The Nation writes of Leica as a lifestyle brand. In the very last sentence is an interesting snippet...

...lifestyle brands such as Tumi, Rimowa and "Leica" all launch new items to celebrate the new season.

Two things caught our eye in this last article. First, the fact that more and more, people are calling Leica a "lifestyle brand" (somewhat different from the usual "luxury brand" connotation) - and second, is Leica really going to launch additional fashion-related items? They already sell T-shirts, caps and wristbands, money clips and umbrellas. Might we see more along those lines in the near future? Probably not (but anything's possible these days).

Going by the photo above however, it would appear that Leica cameras themselves are the haute couture! Of course, this is nothing new as our gallery of 150+ celebrities with their Leicas will attest. Have some cappuccino while you ponder...

Leica cappuccino

Some might dismiss this as a passing fad, but consider one of Leica's steady, mainstream cameras which was announced in June of 2013. The Leica D-LUX 6 Edition by G-Star RAW. If you're not familiar with G-Star RAW, that's okay. Founded in 1989, they're a player in the "denim fashion" industry. Which explains the look of the camera:

BTW, ur doin it wrong. :D

High Megapixel M Camera at Photokina

$
0
0

Details are still sketchy right now, but we'll go ahead and break the news anyway - and of course, keep you updated on any developments between now and Photokina... This is not a rumor! As you know, Leica will be introducing a CMOS-based Leica S camera. We've been saying that for a while. But what no one else knows is that Leica is set to introduce a high megapixel M camera that's largely new from the existing Leica M (Type 240). What we're not sure of yet is the exact megapixel count; we'd guess 36MP. And yes, despite some silly rumors - it will have an LCD. We also have some other minor details, but we'll keep those close to the vest for now... See what other Leica gear is on tap for Photokina 2014 and stay tuned!

But why announce the "new" Leica M-P right before Photokina, you might ask. Usual reasons... Low-hanging fruit. Easy modifications to an existing body for more money ($700-1,000 USD). While this is typically a sign of clearing out the channels and parts bins ahead of a new camera, there's still a nagging question. What about the price increase on the Leica M (Type 240) (of $300 USD) then? Your guess is as good as ours at this point. It could be that the new camera will reach a new high for Leica prices, or that the existing M/M-P will become the "new M-E" (entry level). Honestly, we don't have all the answers... Yet.

Of course, don't forget about the new Leica M-S and limited edition(s) we posted about also...

Update (8/29/14):

There is one other explanation that we can offer, given the tips we have from our sources. One thing we do know is that a "high resolution M camera" is coming. What we haven't been able to confirm or deny is whether or not it might be the new M Monochrom we're expecting. Taken in the context of the existing M Monochrom, at 18MP - one based on the M (Type 240) at 24MP... Would indeed be a "high resolution M camera" - and fit within the parameters of the recent M-P announcement and regular M price increase... Either way, this is good news. Stay tuned.

Clearly there are those (especially on certain forums) that don't believe us. That's okay. The rumor business is an inexact one. But don't assume you know everything (not saying that we do, either). You might recall that we were the only ones that knew of the Leica M-E coming at Photokina 2012... How soon we forget, eh?

Leica to Announce New Film Leica M-A

Exclusive La Vida Leica news - we have word that Leica will be announcing a successor (and not a special edition) to the fabled Leica MP film camera among the New Leica Products at Photokina 2014! Likely during the 60 Years of Leica M event on the first day of the show. It will be called the Leica M-A. Don't expect huge changes, but subtle updates to the design, a better rangefinder and the return of the rewind crank (as it is no longer available separately)! It will be a standalone version similar to the one we saw introduced in the Leica M Edition 100 set earlier this year, albeit in a regular, rather than stainless steel body (just like the upcoming Summilux-M 28mm f/1.4 ASPH). We'll keep you posted as we learn more.

Leica to Announce M 60 Special Edition

In a leak of their website, Leica Camera AG has tipped their hat once again, as they did with the Leica T. It has been all but confirmed that we will see a Leica M 60 Special Edition (as well as the Leica M-A film camera we mentioned earlier) among the New Leica Products at Photokina 2014! More details as we get them!

Update (9/8/14):

We're getting bits and pieces about this new camera. It will be "simplified." Does that mean no LCD? Our source seems to confirm that this will be the case. A few years back, Seal (the musician) requested this "feature" from Leica. Seems he's finally getting his wish. Another piece; it will only shoot color RAW/DNG images (using the same sensor as the Leica M (Type 240), and for obvious reasons - no video.

Leica Photo Cloud Service Website?

It seems there's another tidbit of Leica news pre-Photokina 2014. It seems that Leica Camera AG has registered the domain leica-fotopark.com. Could it be the cloud service we mentioned a while back? This domain was registered not long ago - on June 6, 2014.

A cloud for photographers

Another area of innovation which the company thinks about is the photos themselves, i.e. the files. "I’m sure you all here have memory cards, hard drives, online backups Dropbox type, and more. But for now it seems to us that all these services are not adapted to the very specific needs of photographers." To say that Leica will launch cloud services, there is a step that Mr. Kaufmann does not cross : "One thing is for sure, we will not enter this field without a partner. We are a small business and this is not our core business. But we think about it and we'll tell you more at Photokina."

Schopf: Japanese Shooting Themselves in Knee

$

In an article over on Die Welt where they interview Alfred Schopf of Leica in, "The Japanese are shooting themselves in the foot from a marketing perspective" (in German) are some interesting tidbits. For example, the Leica M-E is selling better than anyone thought; some 300-350 per month. He goes on to say that releasing new cameras every six months only serves to frustrate customers and doubts we'll see 60MP cameras any time soon. The big news is that he confirms what we've told you - successors to the S and X2 cameras will be announced at Photokina 2014!

Highlights

  • Leica sells 300-350 M-E cameras per month
  • There are 186 Leica stores/boutiques
  • Leica will introduce S and X2 successors
  • 60MP not likely to be commonplace soon
  • Video isn't used in-camera very much
  • Kaufmann owns 55%, Blackstone 45%
  • Blackstone can't complain on their return
and will probably sell in the medium term

The Article

The article translated into English (via Google):

"Japanese shoot themselves in the foot from a marketing perspective"

Last year, the camera market collapsed. Leica deserves nevertheless good as Chef Alfred Schopf says. The small German noble brand is successful - unlike rivals from the Far East.

Die Welt: Mr. Schopf, there was already years, as the future of the last German camera manufacturer seemed anything but certain. How is Leica today in this difficult market?

Schopf: We're fine. Last year broke the entire camera market, instead of 90 million cameras, the industry sold only 60 million. We, however, grew by five percent. In constant currency, we would have achieved double-digit sales growth.

Die Welt: And you make a profit?

Schopf: Let me say this: Leica earning good money. Look at the numbers, however our Japanese competitors on, you expect out their positive currency effects amounting to 35 percent and you see how bad it really is which.

Die Welt: That sounds like gloating.

Schopf: No, not at all. We only now just many things differently than the competition and be rewarded for it. We focus on each of our cameras on excellent lenses, large sensors in a compact housing, a simpler user interface and a haptic experience. In addition, our marketing concept is another. We set our prices not only three months after launch down, but put on a private, high-quality retail concept. We have now 186 worldwide Leica stores and boutiques.

Die Welt: As unique, many of the things you mentioned no more. Sony has with the A-series compact camera with a great sensor and good workmanship. And these devices cost only a fraction of a Leica.

Schopf: But but they have far too little high-class lenses.

Die Welt: As Zeiss jumps yes Sony now with its own line of lenses.

Schopf: I am very curious. But ultimately is the way, the Sony has taken, of course, a confirmation of our philosophy. We are much smaller than Sony and must therefore focus. The benefits us now. Sony on the other hand can try a lot. These are the most exciting cameras 2014

Die Welt: It has been the impression that Sony is driving the market with its innovations especially in the sensor area in front of it.

Schopf: I believe that we are approaching an optimum at the sensors. Good As It Gets hardly. Check out the 36-megapixel full-frame sensor on who is faced with the Sony and the Nikon D810 A7R. Which is extremely difficult to handle. You have to watch very closely to the time of the exposure time to get the maximum. I'm not sure that we - as many observers believed until recently - will eventually see a very, very high-resolution full-frame sensor with 60 megapixels.

Die Welt: Well, if you look at the past, there were a rapid development. Quasi each half year, the technology improves.

Schopf: I see it differently. Much of what came on the market since the recent Photokina two years ago, is more marketing than a great technical progress. The video function of their cameras do not even use a lot of people. Us, anyway does this development not hurt.

Die Welt: Until the hit still takes.

Schopf: Honestly, many of the Japanese producers shoot themselves but technically marketing itself regularly in the knee. They bring every six months a new camera on the market. No sooner is this on the shelves, they lower the prices so that the customers who have already purchased, frustrated suffered a loss in value. So it does not bind customers.

Die Welt: How then? In preparing the luxury cameras for the super rich?

Schopf: They're outdated ideas. Leica customers are certainly not the dentists with Porsche in front of the garage. The range is very large. Sure, Russian President Vladimir Putin called a Leica S his own. But us, every customer is equally welcome. We are happy just with the American who saves a Leica M since the age of nine, as well as on the aforementioned dentist, for the money that is less subject.

Die Welt: But professional photographers buy but hardly a Leica.

Schopf: you think. The majority of people who buy a Leica, has dealt with photography. These customers have high demands on your own creativity and often believe that, for example, the autofocus would restrict it. But honestly, we have discussed up and down the target topic. I have it then ended. We need the customers who want their camera absparen from the mouth. And we need the customers who pay their equipment out of petty cash.

Die Welt: you have with the M, the X, T and the S-series a total of four premium lines on offer. Which run away because according to your requirements?

Schopf: The demand for our products is generally good. The medium format camera from the S series is, however, reached the end of their life cycle. Since it will soon be at the Photokina news. The same applies to the X-2 with the permanently installed lenses and the APSC sensor, which we will introduce at Photokina the successor. Thus, new system cameras beat the test

Die Welt: Who would buy the X-series still for so much money, where Leica but now has the T-series, which is strongly reminiscent of an iPhone and when you can change lenses?

Schopf: There are people who change the lenses reluctant because dirt can then get to the sensor. And our built-in X-series lenses are simply very, very good. The X continues to enjoy great popularity.

Die Welt: Your most prestigious series, the traditional rangefinder cameras, still the old CCD sensor offer next to the new M 240 with the Leica ME. When the bearings are because finally empty?

Schopf: The Leica ME sold surprisingly well. No one would have thought so. Our assumption was that the ME totläuft with the introduction of the new M and the new sensor within a year. This is not the case. We sell them still 300 to 350 cameras per month.

Die Welt: If it runs so great, then it's only a matter of time before your investor you sold. Are there any plans?

Schopf: How indeed belong to 55 percent Andreas Kaufmann as anchor investor. The rest of our shares is Blackstone. And Blackstone would be no financial investor, if he would not eventually find the exit in us. On the other hand: For the price, the Blackstone has paid for our shares, Blackstone can not complain about the previous development. But surely this investor wants to get out in the medium term.

Die Welt: Did Stephen Schwarzman Blackstone boss a Leica?

Schopf: If, then he has at least not purchased directly from us. But we have presented a year ago our plans right in front of him, and he brought us as a brand a high degree of sympathy.

Our Twitter friend Jeremiah Rogers was traveling to Kyoto, Japan - so of course we suggested that he check out Leica Store Kyoto. Turns out it was a great experience and one he truly enjoyed. Check out some more info on those olive limited edition MP and X2 cameras.

Other than the insanely expensive cameras the internal architecture of the Kyoto Leica store is fascinating. Just you might imagine an Apple store could be if it had lower volume. The upstairs is literally a gallery showing photography made with Leica cameras.

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Leica M, Leica Camera has introduced the limited, special edition Leica M Edition 60. The set includes a Leica M-P (Type 240) and a Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens - both special versions created by Audi Design. Though the camera has the inner workings of the Leica M-P, the handling was changed radically... It has no display – the photographer can change only the bare functions required for digital photography: shutter speed, aperture, focusing and ISO sensitivity. The Leica M Edition 60 will be available from Leica Stores and Boutiques starting October 2014, with a price of 15,000 €.

The essence of photography: the LEICA M Edition 60 Special edition for the 60th anniversary of the Leica M rangefinder system

Description

This year, Leica Camera AG, Wetzlar, is celebrating two special anniversaries. At photokina 2014, the focus of the celebrations will not be exclusively on 100 years of Leica photography, but also on the 60th anniversary of the legendary Leica M rangefinder system.

The first Leica M-Camera to possess the unique characteristics of the Leica M-System was the Leica M3, presented in 1954. A camera distinguished by absolute mechanical and optical precision and a focus on the essential parameters needed for photography. A camera with functions that clearly placed the skills of the photographer in the foreground rather than any special features the camera offered. Continuously perfected over six decades, these unique characteristics, today in combination with the latest technological innovations, still differentiate the current Leica M models from other cameras.

And now, on the 60th anniversary of this legendary camera, Leica Camera AG presents a commemorative limited edition: the Leica M Edition 60. The set consists of a Leica M-P digital camera (Type 240) and the fast Leica Summilux-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. lens, both in special versions created by Audi Design that pay homage to the essence of photography and carry it back to its origins.

Reduced to only the essential camera features, the Leica M Edition 60 is the first digital camera to concentrate exclusively on the bare functions required for digital photography – shutter speed, aperture, focusing and ISO sensitivity. This is also the reason for the replacement of the camera’s display with an ISO selector dial. For reasons of quality, exposures are saved as raw data in DNG format. Working with the Leica M Edition 60 intentionally demands the same care and attention as working with an analogue model. Only the sensor and the entire electronics reflect the state of the art of contemporary camera technology.

With the Leica M Edition 60, photographers compose and frame each subject in the viewfinder, set the aperture and shutter speed and press the shutter release at the decisive moment. Instead of the constant distraction of technical features and the checking of menu settings and controls, they enjoy the freedom to concentrate completely on their subjects. With this concept, Leica is once again the synonym for an art in which technology plays a role subordinate to the essentially creative aspects of photography.

In addition to these unusual features, above all the exceptional finish of the products is an outstanding aspect of the Leica M Edition 60. Here, stainless steel – a material that is extremely difficult to work with – has been employed for the visible metallic elements of the camera and lens. Resistant and durable in equal measure, this material guarantees enduring value preservation and lends the products a refined character with a silky sheen. The premium look is further complemented by special anthracite-coloured genuine-leather trim applied to the camera body.

Strictly limited to 600 examples worldwide, the cameras and lenses of the Leica M Edition 60 feature unique matching numbers between 001/600 and 600/600. The M-Cameras also bear the engravings ‘Leica 60’ and ‘Leica Camera Wetzlar’. The special edition includes a camera protector, also created by Audi Design.

The Leica M Edition 60 will be available from Leica Stores and Boutiques starting October 2014.

Description

The pinnacle of mechanical technology: LEICA M-A

With the Leica M-System, Leica Camera AG, Wetzlar, is one of the few manufacturers still producing both analogue and digital cameras. In this, the company can draw from decades of experience in the construction of the finest precision-engineered cameras. Now – 60 years after the first Leica M rangefinder camera, the M3, left the factory to significantly change the world of photography – we have chosen the occasion of this anniversary to present a new analogue model: the Leica M-A.

As a purely mechanical rangefinder camera, the Leica M-A stands for a return to photography in its most original form. Without reliance on a monitor, exposure metering or batteries, photographers can explore entirely new creative horizons. Because, with a camera reduced to only essential camera functions, users of the M-A can now concentrate entirely on the essential parameters of subject composition – namely focal length, aperture and shutter speed – and on capturing the decisive moment.

From its shutter-speed dial and the aperture ring on the lens to the characteristic rangefinder focusing principle – the technical specifications of the Leica M-A are essentially based on the currently available analogue Leica MP. All of its precision-engineered components and functions are designed and constructed for absolute robustness and a long working life, and are housed in a painstakingly hand-built metal body. This ensures that the Leica M-A, as a product with particularly enduring value, brushes aside every challenge with absolute dependability.

The visible elements of the Leica M-A are as timeless as the precision-engineered principles employed inside it. For example, the Leica red dot was omitted to emphasise the classical simplicity of its design. Seen from the side, the Leica M-A is significantly slimmer than its digital counterparts.

The camera can be supplied in a choice of two different finishes: the classic appearance of the silver chrome version carries forward the traditions of 60 years of Leica M design. In the black chrome alternative, the M-A is reminiscent of the style of the M Monochrom and sets new standards in unobtrusiveness and discretion. While the silver chrome version of the M-A displays its origins in the engraving on its top plate, only much closer scrutiny of its completely matt black counterpart reveals the discreetly engraved Leica script on its accessory shoe.

Each Leica M-A is supplied complete with Kodak Tri-X 400 black-and-white film, which is also celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Since its appearance on the market in 1954, its unmistakeable look, exceptional sharpness and tonal gradation, extremely broad exposure latitude and very good shadow detail made this black-and-white film a firm favourite and the classic medium for art and reportage photography.

The Leica M-A will be available from authorised Leica dealers starting October 2014.

Leica Camera AG, Wetzlar, now offers two of the fastest Leica M-Lenses, the Leica Noctilux-M 50 mm f/0.95 ASPH. and the Leica Summilux-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH., in an alternative silver anodised finish. The technical specifications of both lenses are identical to those of their serially produced counterparts. Whether in classic black or elegant silver, the two lenses offer exceptional imaging performance and enormous versatility, particularly when shooting in available light.

As the world’s fastest aspherical lens, the Leica Noctilux-M 50 mm f/0.95 ASPH. represents a milestone in lens construction and possesses a unique performance spectrum. At its maximum aperture, its extremely shallow depth of field enables the creation of portraits and detail studies characterized by inimitable aesthetic qualities. When used for available-light photography, the lens actually exceeds the perceptive capabilities of the human eye and delivers outstanding imaging results. Due to the very natural reproduction of perspectives and proportions by its 50 mm focal length, it is also an ideal universal lens that allows true-to-life rendition of subjects under normal lighting conditions.

The Summilux-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. combines a moderate wide-angle character with natural reproduction of proportions and is therefore also an extremely versatile lens. Regardless of whether it’s a matter of selective focus in the close-up range, high-contrast available-light applications or landscape shots with immense depth of field, the lens delivers persuasive arguments in any situation. Its focal length of 35 mm, the classic for reportage photography, makes it ideal as the first lens for newcomers to Leica M-Cameras, while its low weight and particularly compact size make it perfect as part of a lightweight M-System for travel photography.
