M Monochrom with "Red Dot" SE?

$

No, not really - but if this isn't some sort of error, it may mark a new low for Leica "special editions." Apparently you can order an M Monochrom with a "red dot" (Leica logo roundel) for only €3,000 ($4066 USD) over the regular version. We're quite frankly amazed. Compare the regular version against the red-dotted one over on the Leica Store Berlin website. While it appears to be a one-off (and not a true special edition as it says "Einzelstück" or single piece), we really hope this is a gaff. You can also order an M Monochrom prototype for €14,000 ($18,927 USD)...

The Leica X Vario will now be available with a silver body as an alternative to the discreet black of the standard model. In either classic black or elegant silver, the Leica X Vario has the typical look and feel of a Leica and sets standards in its class with its picture quality. Highlights of the Leica X Vario include a high-performance, APS-C format, CMOS image sensor with over 16.5 megapixels (effective 16.2 MP) that is particularly large for this camera class. The Leica X Vario is the first compact camera to combine this professional sensor with a high-performance zoom lens – the Leica Vario Elmar 18–46 mm f/3.5–6.4 ASPH. Available as of February, 2014!

Allendale, NJ (February 25, 2014) - Leica Camera presents a sleek, silver version of the Leica X Vario as an alternative finish to the understated black of the standard model. In classic black or stylish silver, the Leica X Vario is a product that epitomizes the Leica’s trademark quality and offers even greater versatility and creative freedom as well as brilliant image quality.

The Leica X-System is defined by its high-performance, APS-C format, CMOS image sensor with over 16.5 megapixels (effective 16.2 MP), remarkably large compared to other cameras in its class. The Leica X Vario is the first compact camera to combine this professional sensor with a high-performance zoom lens – the Leica Vario Elmar 18–46 mm f/3.5–6.4 ASPH. – and, as a result, delivers particularly brilliant exposures in all photographic situations.

For expansive interior shots, landscapes or portrait photography, the zoom range offered by the Leica X Vario allows entirely new horizons for creative photography. Its versatility is further emphasized by a full-HD video recording function, along with crystal-clear sound recording, that lets photographers capture those special moments in moving pictures with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels at a frame rate of 30 full frames per second. A wide range of camera setting options and fast, precise autofocus further enhance the features offered by the Leica X Vario, a camera with a performance profile that offers even the most demanding photographers maximum creative freedom for spontaneous shots as well as for carefully arranged compositions.

Leica also offers an extensive portfolio of accessories for the X Vario that can be added to the camera to make it easily adaptable for every photographic situation. For example, the Leica EVF 2 Viso-Flex electronic accessory viewfinder with 1.4 megapixels and 90° swivel function is extremely helpful when shooting from unusual angles. The accessories also include a handgrip and finger loops in three different sizes that perfectly balance the weight of the camera in the photographer’s hands. An optional lens hood diminishes reflections, and the Leica SF 24 D flash unit offers greater freedom for subject lighting. The portfolio of accessories is further complemented by a comprehensive range of premium-quality bags, cases and straps.

The silver X Vario and the entire range of optional accessories are now available at select Leica Stores, boutiques, and authorized dealers across the U.S.

What do you get the Leica photographer that has everything? The new Leica S Edition 100 Set of course! Priced at $34,500 USD, it comes complete with a Leica S (Typ 006) camera and the two most popular S lenses - the Leica Summarit-S 70mm f/2.5 ASPH CS and the Leica Elmarit-S 30mm f/2.8 ASPH CS. Each piece features special engraving - the centennial logo and comes in a Rimowa Topas Multiwheel Cabin Trolley in bright aluminum.

On the occasion of this very special anniversary, 2014 will see not only numerous events, but also a series of centennial editions. These products are a testament to Leica’s 100 years of innovation and dedication to excellence in photography since Oskar Barnack’s invention of the first Leica, “Ur-Leica” in 1913/1914. The first of these special centennial editions is the Leica S 'Edition 100'. This centennial edition comprises a Leica S (Typ 006) medium-format system camera and two of the most popular S lenses, both with a central shutter, offering exceptional versatility in a wide range of situations - the Leica Summarit-S 70mm f/2.5 ASPH CS and the Leica Elmarit-S 30mm f/2.8 ASPH CS.

The Leica Summarit-S 70mm f/2.5 ASPH CS is ideal as a standard focal length for many photographic applications. Its extreme speed and outstanding imaging performance guarantee outstanding results at all apertures and distance settings. The angle of view of the Leica Elmarit-S 30mm f/2.8 ASPH CS corresponds to that of a 24mm lens in 35mm format and opens up new creative horizons in image composition - in particular for architectural and landscape photography.

A particular feature of the centennial edition is the special engraving - the centennial logo - which appears on the body of the Leica S and on both S lenses. The products in this set are supplied in a Leica version of the Rimowa Topas Multiwheel Cabin Trolley in bright aluminum with high-quality inner compartment and thanks to its compact size, the case is ideal for use as hand luggage on flights. In addition when packed in the case, the camera and lenses are safe and sound - even when shooting on location under extreme conditions.

Please note: the individual items will not be available separately.

The Portuguese consumer union Proteste states that "Leica is unsurpassable in the art of shooting" in a published poll of 22,000 consumers, in their monthly magazine (#355/March 2014). In the results, Leica leads in both general satisfaction at 83% and reliability at 99% which are ahead of Panasonic in second place with 79% and 97%, respectively and Canon in third at 79% and 96%. Interestingly, 10% of respondents had problems with the battery. Also interesting is that Sony, Fujifilm and Samsung ranked lowest (though admittedly not that much lower, relatively).

Leica: 100 Years of Capturing the Moment

The Telegraph has an article called "Leica: 100 years of capturing the moment." It's a brief, whirlwind tour of a century of Leica photography - from Oskar Barnack's Ur Leica to the Leica 1 and later Leica M. Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, Robert Capa and William Eggleston are mentioned, of course. Wrapping up the article is the move to digital. Another article explores "Leica Looks to the Future."

Their design hasn’t changed much in half a century and they belong to an era before Instagram and selfies. They suggest a certain seriousness – you can’t point and shoot with a classic Leica, there is no auto-focus – and so they are beloved of Hollywood stars who want to suggest polymath creative urges. And can actually afford to buy one.
